Preliminary results from Uzbekistan’s 2026 population census put the country’s permanent population at 39.047 million. The exercise also clarified the residence and social status of 810,600 people who had not been reflected in the existing records.
The census results are expected to form the basis for continuously updated population and agricultural registers. One hundred indicators used in socioeconomic development programmes and 50 indicators covering agriculture and cultivated land are due to be updated. National accounts for 2017–2025 are also set to be reassessed.
According to the data presented, the unobserved economy currently accounts for 23% of economic activity, equivalent to UZS 246 trillion. In agriculture, the segment represents 60% of total turnover, while the incomes of 6.5 million of the country’s 15.2 million employed people are not fully captured in official records.
A nationwide business census is planned for 15 October to 30 November 2026 to inventory operating economic units and update statistical registers. A National Data Platform is also planned for launch by 1 July 2027. In Portfolio Investments’ assessment, the revised statistical base should improve market sizing; investors should also allow for possible revisions to historical comparisons as national accounts are reassessed.
