ILO, IFC and Uzbekistan's government, employer and worker representatives launched the Better Work Uzbekistan programme. The initial operating period was 24 months under a memorandum signed on 30 May 2023.
The programme combined factory compliance assessments, training and advisory services. Uzbekistan was among the world's ten largest cotton producers. EBRD supplied initial programme funding, and the initiative was intended to strengthen access to global apparel sourcing markets.
The initiative addresses labour-compliance and buyer-access risks for exporters, while any ESG and market improvements remained programme objectives rather than measured effects.
